Wig Styling
Moira’s hair has two gravity-defying spikes in the back as well as some voluminous swoops on the front and sides.. Additionally, she has a very jagged hairline with a widow’s peak. The base wig is a Scylla in Autumn Orange from Epic Cosplay Wigs. This is a lace front wig, which is key to achieving a convincing hairline.
The hairline lace was ventilated with excess hair cut from the back of the wig. Once her iconic hairline was appropriately jagged, the excess lace was cut off. The wig was then trimmed to approximately the correct length all around (erring longer) and the major spikes and swoops were pieced out and clipped to separate them. To get the large spikes, first a layer of hair around the center of the spike were pulled away (these need to stay smooth). The inner core of the spike is then excessively teased until it is sufficient body has been built up and it can stand up on its own. Small amounts of Got2B Glued hairspray is spritzed into the base to help hold its form, and the core is roughly shaped into the angle and curve of the spike, adding small amounts of spray all the way up. Once the core is shaped, the layer of hair that was initially pulled away is carefully laid on top and frozen into place with more spray. These outer layers are smooth and straight hair, and give a clean appearance to the spike. This method is used on the two large spikes that protrude from the back of her head.
For the swoop shapes on the sides of her head (especially the one coming from the center of her head and swooping to her left), a layering method is used to achieve these complex curves. First, most of the hair destined for the swoop is pulled off to the side, so that only the lowest layer remains. This layer should be in a plane that allows you to hold it in the shape of the swoop (in the case of Moira’s center one, a front-to-back vertical plane). Holding this contour, lightly spritz hairspray and freeze it into place. Repeat this with each thin parallel plane of hair, layering each on top of the one below it and gradually building up the body of the swoop. The spray is used very lightly here. Repeat with the swoops on the right side, and the small swoop underneath the large front one.
Lastly, the small ahoge at the front is trimmed and sprayed to hold its shape. It is lightweight enough to hold without additional support.
